Abbey Hepner is an artist based in the Midwest United States. She is interested in social geography and explores the human relationship with place and technology through her artistic practice. Hepner frequently works at the intersection of art and science, investigating biopolitics and the use of health as a currency. She maintains deep ties to Western Colorado, and as a third-generation downwinder, her work often deals with nuclear issues and extractive industries. She received undergraduate degrees in Art and Psychology from the University of Utah, USA, and an MFA in Photography from the University of New Mexico, USA.
Hepner has been recognized globally for her award-winning photographs. Through 2026, her work is touring in the Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition in London and Tokyo, and throughout the UK in the Royal Photographic Society International Photography Exhibition 167. Her work has been shown in the Mt. Rokko International Photography Festival (Kobe, Japan), SITE Santa Fe, the Krannert Art Museum, the Noorderlicht Photofestival, the University of Notre Dame, and the Lianzhou Foto Festival. Her work has been highlighted in Hyperallergic, Lenscratch, Ars Technica, Artillery Magazine, and Fraction Magazine. She has presented at numerous Society for Photographic Education conferences and served on the Board of Directors from 2020 to 2025. Her monograph, The Light at the End of History, about nuclear issues, was published by Daylight Books in 2021.
